A nice Swiss 10.4 X 42R mm centre fire single shot Vetterli target rifle with Stutzen stock and set trigger. Vetterli single shot target bolt action with bulbous spring housing to the rear of the bolt and bolt release latch to the left side. The top of the round action engraved SOC. IND. SUISSE SYST. VETTERLIN either side of a Swiss cross next to GW and Swiss inspection / proof marks. Chequered walnut stock with deep cheek piece to the left side, Stutzen pattern spurred trigger guard and set triggers with let off adjustment screw to the centre of the triggers. Horn nose cap and two sling swivels. Two barrel retaining keys and crescent butt plate. Replacement clearing rod to the underside. Round barrel with octagonal breech is fitted with a tangent rear sight graduated to 1000 meters and is struck with various Swiss inspection and proof marks. Built on the Vetterli bolt system for sale to a Swiss target shooter of the mid / late Victorian age to compete in the very popular rifle matches that were all the rage in Switzerland at the time with both local Canton matches and lager national matches being shot regularly, using these specialist target rifles with comfortable Stutzen stocks and fully adjustable set match triggers. In very good condition with good bore and mechanics, working set trigger, a nice sharp well chequered stock and much original blue to the metal work. A good and interesting example of a classic Swiss target rifle.
