A scarce 10.4 X 42mm rim fire Swiss Model 1870 Cadet Carbine. Solid base single shot Vetterli action with bolt release key to the rear has bolt with bulbous spring housing to the rear. Walnut stock of diminutive cadet pattern is fitted with regulation pattern steel furniture and has two spring retained barrel bands. Old repair to the toe of the butt, the whole lightly cleaned over with some loss to markings. Octagonal to round barrel rifled with four deep grooves has a tangent rear sight graduated to 800 meters and blade foresight, the breech struck with various Swiss military issue and proof marks and issue number 850. Slotted brass jag head clearing rod to the underside. Made in very limited numbers these cadet arms are about ¾ of the size of the service arms to suit the young cadets they were issued to, and fired a lower powered round with around 2/3 of the charge in the full powered service round, although the actions are strong enough to fire the regulation round if required or the cadet rounds were not available. In good condition with good bore and mechanics, cleaned over stock and fading blue finish to the barrel and action. A rare Swiss cadet carbine made in limited numbers and rarely seen on the market today.
