7.5 X 53.5mm Model 1889 Swiss issue Schmidt Rubin service rifle. Blued action with matching numbers straight pull bolt. Walnut stock with finger grooves to the fore end has regulation pattern steel furniture and various Swiss military inspection marks to the butt. Barrel with Swiss military inspection and ownership marks is fitted with a tangent rear sight graduated to 2000 meters with two barrel bands. Windage driftable blade front sight. Twelve shot magazine with cut of lever to allow single shot loading while keeping the rounds in the magazine in reserve. The first small bore, magazine fed repeating rifle issued anywhere in the world the Schmidt Rubin 1889 was years ahead of its time and was the fore runner of all the magazine fed bolt action rifles that were used by the world’s armies up to the end of the Second World War. The 7.5mm Swiss black powder cartridge went on to become the basis of the .303” round that was adopted by the British army in the 1890’s. In good condition with a good bore, nice sharp stock and much military blue finish to the metal work. A very good example of a classic European military rifle. Used in the 2016 motion picture 'The Legend of Tarzan'.
