A .577” Parker Field & Sons volunteer MkII** three band Snider prize rifle presented by Captain Banting to the best shot of his company in 1867. Border engraved Pattern 1853 swivel link lock is signed to the front of the cupped hammer PARKER FIELD & SONs. Walnut stock with regulation pattern brass furniture has a presentation plaque to the right side engraved CAPTAIN BANTING’S PRIZE WON BY ENSIGN H G NEVILLE 1867 COMPANY PRIZE MEETING. London proofed three groove rifled barrel retained by Baddeley snag free bands is fitted with a ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards and is engraved 233 HOLBORN LONDON to the front of the sight. The MkII** Snider shoe is stamped to the top with Sniders Arrow S trade mark next to Victorian London commercial proof marks. Made to the regulation issue pattern by London maker Parker Field & Sons for sale to a volunteer soldier of the mid Victorian age, in this case Captain Banting who offered it as a prize at his companies annual shooting match which was one by Ensign Neville, both of whom were proficient shots who featured regularly in the Wimbledon prize lists of the time, two of which are attached as pictures in this listing. In good condition with fair to good bore with good mechanics, a nice sharp stock with a good prize plaque to a well known Victorian target shooter and volunteer with fading blue / brown finish to the metal work. A good example of a scarce Victorian prize rifle by a well known London maker.
