An interesting .577” Ordnance issue Enfield Snider MkII** three band rifle fitted with steel furniture of Patt 1853 design. Walnut stock with three barrel bands fitted with regulation Pattern ’53 furniture but unusually of case hardened iron rather than the more common brass fittings, struck to the rear of the trigger guard tang with a Crowned I inspection stamp. Pattern 53 swivel link lock with Crowned VR to the tail is engraved to the front of the hammer 1860 ENFIELD next to a crowned broad arrow ordnance ownership mark. MkII** Snider action with correct cup faced hammer struck with military TP tower proof marks next to later London commercial proofs and II** to the receiver ring. Three groove Minnie rifled barrel struck with Victorian London proof marks is fitted with a ladder rear sight graduated to 1000 yards with clearing rod to the underside. A standard military issue rifle this is one of a few we have seen over the years that are fitted with iron rather than brass furniture. In very good condition with a nice sharp stock, good bore and mechanics and much blue finish to the barrel and action. A scarce and interesting variant of the regulation British pattern infantry rifle of the late 1860’s / early 1870’s.
