An Ordnance smooth bore military percussion musket by Enfield of Pattern 1839 type sold on for commercial sale and signed Dickinson Minories. Lock converted from surplus flintlock parts by the Ordnance at the Enfield Lock factory is signed to the front of the heavy hammer with a Crowned VR over ENFIELD next to an ordnance broad arrow ownership mark and 1841. Walnut stock of regulation form is fitted with an interesting combination of regulation brass furniture, the rammer pipes and butt plate of a Pattern 1839, the plain nose cap of a flintlock Brown Bess designed for the common bayonet not having a spring catch and the Lovells side nail cups and small trigger guard from the Pattern 1853 rifle musket. The right side of the butt struck with an Ordnance Broad Arrow BO mark with an old repair to the top rear of the lock plate. 39” smooth bore barrel of Pattern 1839 type with standing rear sight and foresight / bayonet stud to the muzzle. The breech stamped with Victorian commercial London proof marks and signed to the front of the rear sight DICKINSON MINORIES LONDON. Manufactured apparently at Enfield lock out of a mixture of surplus flintlock parts and where needed new manufacture parts of contemporary design probably for issue to colonial forces the ordnance manufactured a variety of such weapons in the mid to late 1850’s. Many were later sold off to the commercial market reproofed like this one sold by Dickinson who seemed to make a good business out of surplus sales at the time. In good condition with fair / good bore good mechanics and a nice sharp stock with fading brown finish to the barrel. An interesting Ordnance extra service musket sold from service and retailed by a well known London firm of the mid Victorian age.
