.65” Lovells Pattern 1842 Yeomanry Carbine, Tower 1844. Pattern 1842 Carbine size lock is engraved to the front of the hammer with a Crowned VR over TOWER 1844, next to a Crowned Broad Arrow Ordnance ownership mark. Walnut stock with regulation brass furniture has a sling bar and ring to the left side and Ordnance inspection stamps to the rear of the spurred trigger guard. The right side struck with BO under a Broad Arrow. The butt plate tang engraved ECYC T-t T 56 (possibly Eastern Counties Yeomanry Cavalry Territorial Troop). Key retained smooth bore .65” barrel fitted with a standing rear sight is struck with Tower Ordnance proof marks. The front of the barrel fitted with a swivel rammer. In effect a scaled down version of the .75” Victoria Carbine issued to the front line cavalry regiments of the army the Yeomanry Carbine was a very handy weapon well suited to its intended role as a short range defence weapon for the use of mounted troops whose primary weapon was the sword or in some cases the lance. In good condition with good well marked stock, good mechanics and bore, small dent to the left fore end to the front of the barrel key. A nice example of one of Lovells classic series of smooth bore percussion muskets and carbines issued to the British army in the 1840’s before the adoption of the rifle in 1853.
