A good British Ordnance issue chrome plated Pattern 1888 Mk1 2nd type Parade bayonet by Wilkinson’s of London. Plated hilt with brass rivet retained 2nd Pattern wooden scales has release catch to the left side and is stamped with issue number 560 to the right. The scales stamped between the rivets with ordnance military inspectors marks. Chrome plated double edged Pattern 1888 spear point blade is struck to the right rear with a Broad Arrow Ordnance ownership mark over a military inspectors stamp and X. The left side stamped with a Crowned VR over 4 ’98 for manufacture in April 1898 and WILKINSON. LONDON. In its correct steel mounted chrome plated black leather parade scabbard, the chape and locket struck with military inspection marks. Feint Broad Arrow stamp to the rear side of the leather. A regulation pattern issue bayonet these parade models were chrome plated and highly polished to be used only for ceremonial purposes and issued for example to those men detailed to guard the colours at regimental parades. While I have seen quite a few 1907, No9 and L1 SLR parade bayonets this is the first 1888 version I have seen that is a fully ordnance marked issue weapon. In good condition with 90%+ original chrome plate with nice sharp grip scales a good clean well marked blade in a nice scabbard again retaining 90% of its original plating. A good example of a scarce early British Parade Bayonet in its correct plated issue scabbard.
