Ordnance issue No7 Mk1 bayonet for the No4 rifle or Sten MkV SMG by Elkington & Co Ltd of Birmingham. Red Tufnell bolt retained No7 grip scales with finger grooves to the underside and rotating locking boss to the rear to affix the bayonet to the rifle. The boss struck to the left side M/78 for Midlands Factory No78 which was Elkington’s based in Birmingham. Bowie pattern fullered single edged blade indistinctly struck to the left side No7 Mk1/7 and to the right with a broad arrow ordnance owner ship mark and M78, the war time factory code for Elkington’s. In its regulation issue black painted steel scabbard with frog stud to the front. Developed late in the war for issue with the No4 rifle and MkV Sten gun the No7 was in fact too expensive and well made for general issue on rifles but did go to the guards regiments and saw issue to the regular army for parade duty, making it one of the rarest of the issue bayonets of the late WW2 / early cold war period. In good condition with good blade and scabbard, working catch and damage free grips. A nice and interesting bayonet made by one of the famous Birmingham arms manufacturers contracted to the Ordnance during the war.
