Ordnance issue Pattern 1888 MkII bayonet to the 17th Battalion the City of London Regiment in its issue scabbard manufactured at the Enfield Lock Ordnance factory. Grip with rivet retained walnut scales and clearing hole to the rear in the pommel. Pommel with release catch to the left side and cross guard with barrel ring to the upper half. The right side of the pommel stamped 17 LD 1.040 for issue to the 17th Battalion of the City of London Regiment. Double edged spear point blade stamped to the right side with Broad Arrow EFD over military inspection stamp and X bending test mark for manufacture at the Royal Manufactory in Enfield, North London. The left side stamped with a Crowned VR and 1 ‘00 for a manufacture date of January 1900, the last full year of Victoria’s 64 year reign. In its correct black leather steel mounted scabbard, the leather stamped to the rear with broad arrow WD mark over EFD for manufacture at Enfield Lock. Standard issue British bayonet for the Long Lee Metford and Enfield rifles as well as many of the .303” conversions of the Martini rifles and carbines, the Pattern 1888 was an effective weapon as a bayonet fitted to the rifle and when used in its own right as a fighting knife. In good condition with good clean Enfield Ordnance marked blade with some pitting to the front half, working catch and scabbard with all stitching intact. A nice turn of the century bayonet by the Governments Enfield Lock factory to the famous City of London regiment.
