Pattern 1859 socket bayonet in its brass mounted brown leather Indian issue pattern scabbard. Fullered tricorn blade with B13 inspection mark to the rear of the top flat below an indistinct maker’s name. Blued socket with rotating locking ring to fit the Indian army issue smooth bore Pattern 1859 musket, based on the Pattern 1853 rifled arm issued to British Troops. In its issue brass mounted brown leather scabbard, the locket with integral frog stud to the front. The .65” smooth bore Patt ’59 musket was fitted with a heavier barrel than the Pattern 1853 rifle, after early Patt ‘58 muskets with standard weight barrels proved to be prone to bending in bayonet fighting after they had been bored to .65”, this required the socket of the Patt ‘59 bayonet to be made of larger diameter than the rifle bayonet of the same design. In good condition with good blade and much blue / black finish to the socket in a good scabbard with intact stitching. A good example of a rare British Issue bayonet for the use of native troops serving on the sub-continent.
