A scarce British Ordnance issue No5 knife bayonet to fit the No5 ‘Jungle Carbine’ or the Sterling Submachine gun manufactured by Wilkinson’s of London in scabbard with frog war time dated frog. Hilt with wooden grip scales secured by two bolts has release catch to the rear left and clearance hole to the front of that with No5 pattern round mortice slot to the rear face of the pommel. Cross guard with large diameter muzzle ring to fit over the flash hider of the No5 rifle or the front muzzle bearing of the Sterling SMG. Fullered Bowie pattern blade is struck to the left side with W.S.C.(Wilkinson Sword Company) below S294, the war time factory code for manufacture at Wilkinson’s factory with Broad Arrow Ordnance ownership mark to the right side next to a large X bending test mark. In its original blued steel No5 scabbard struck with Ordnance Broad Arrow to the top front above the frog stud fitted with a 1945 dated Ordnance issue webbing frog by M.E. Co. Developed in the late stages of the war the No5 bayonet like the Jungle Carbine it was intended to fit on was a light and handy weapon, useable both as a bayonet and as a fighting knife in its own right. When the British adopted the Sterling submachine gun in the late 50’s early 60’s that weapon was adapted to take the No5 bayonet. In good condition with good grip scales, a well-marked blade and a nice issue scabbard. War time coded No5 bayonets rarely come on the market these days and are very collectable.
