A Lovell’s socket bayonet to fit the .65” Pattern 1839 or 1842 Constabulary carbine. 3 ¼” long socket with Lovells spring lug to the rear and zig zag slot to allow fitting over the front sight / bayonet stud of the carbine. 13” tricorn blade with unique pattern of flat spring to the top rear to latch the bayonet into its scabbard to prevent it being snatched by an offender being tackled by the officer wearing the bayonet. The top of the blade to the front of the catch spring struck with an ordnance inspectors mark and indistinct makers mark. Designed for issue with the short smooth bore muskets issued to the Provosts and Military Police they also saw service with the men of the land transport corps who were issued with the constabulary carbines while serving on the baggage trains in the Crimea. In good condition with intact spring and light pitting to the socket.
