Canadian Ordnance issue Ross MkII (Altered) bayonet in its issue brown leather scabbard with integral frog. Hilt with wooden grip scales has release button to the rear left and is stamped to the right of the pommel ROSS RIFLE Co. QUEBEC PATENTED 1907. The left side stamped with Canadian broad arrow ordnance stamp 11 and 3/12 next to a crown 4 inspector’s stamp. Cross guard with muzzle ring to the top. Single edged spear point blade with sharpened tip. In its correct issue brown leather scabbard with iron button tip and staple retained frog. Adopted to fit the Canadian .303” Ross straight pull rifle the bayonets unlike the troublesome rifles performed well in the combat of the trenches. It was however felt the original rounded profile of the tip lacked penetrating capability and around 1915 onwards the tips were reground to a sharp point that proved much better at penetrating the thick great coats and jackets etc worn by German troops during the winter months of the Great War. In good condition with good scales, working catch and a good blade in a nice clean scabbard with all intact stitching. A nice example of a now scarce WW1 issue Canadian arm of the Great War.
