A good British issue, German contract volunteer issue Solingen manufactured Pattern 1856/58 Yataghan sword bayonet in its correct steel mounted leather scabbard. Hilt with rivet retained press chequered leather grip scales has release button to the left of the pommel and screw retained flat spring to the right side. Fullered Yataghan sword blade is stamped to the right side with the Knights Head trade mark of the German town of Solingen, a major centre for cuttlers and arms manufacture at the time. In its issue steel mounted black leather scabbard with opposed Broad Arrow sold from service stamp to the top rear. Adopted for issue to the rifle regiments with the Pattern 1856 short rifles to increase the reach when bayonet fighting with the 33” barrelled rifles the impressive 23” sword blades were a little heavy when fitted to the rifle but were very good short swords used in combat, the main use to which the men of the rifle regiments put them. This 1856/58 volunteer model fits the later three groove light barrel rifles without the forward extension bar on the boss. In very good condition with clean well marked blade, very good leather grips, working catch and a nice scabbard with all intact stitching. A nice scarce bayonet to fit the early volunteer rifle regiment issue three groove rifled Pattern 1856’s.
