A WW1 Turkish ‘Ersatz’ shortened Mauser bayonet in scabbard to fit the G98 or 1888 commission rifle. Wrap around sheet steel hilt with release catch to the rear right has cross guard with split ears barrel ring to the top deigned to fit on both the issue G98 service rifle and the older 1888 8mm commission rifle still in use in Turkey at the time. The cross guard serial numbered to the right side 6371. Shortened, fullered single edge knife blade with German imperial Ordnance inspection stamp to the top at the rear. In its issue shortened pressed steel scabbard with button finial and frog stud to the front. One of a series of war time economy ‘Ersatz’ bayonets, literally translated as ‘Substitute’ bayonets they were simply made from shortened surplus German issue bayonets with pressed steel grips. However, they were practical and effective weapons with German made and military inspected blades and saw wide service. These split ear models being designed to fit both on the old 1888 commission rifles mounting to the side of the barrel and the newer German issue G98 Mauser mounting below the barrel. In good used condition with working catch and much original finish. A good example of an increasingly scarce WW1 issue bayonet.
