A WW1 era Turkish issue shortened G98/05 bayonet in issue scabbard by Mauser dated 1915. Hilt with bolt retained wooden grip scales has flash guard to the top of the grip with release button to the rear right side. Rivet retained cross guard with lower hook of G98 pattern. Fullered, shortened 98/05 blade is struck to the left rear WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER A.G. OBERNDORF An. with W15 over a German Imperial Crown to the top of the spine for manufacture in 1915 by Mauser. In its shortened blued steel issue scabbard with frog stud to the front. Supplied to Turkey during WW1 by her German ally the Turks considered the long and heavy ‘Butcher’ blades of the 1898/05 bayonet to be unsuited to trench warfare when fitted onto the Mauser service rifle and so had their bayonets shortened to a 9 ½” blade which actually makes a handier and more effective weapon both when fitted to the rifle or when used as a fighting knife, a role to which the short blade is particularly suited. In typical used Turkish issue condition with worn scales, good well marked blade, working catch in a Turkish Arsenal shortened scabbard with a few dents and dings. An interesting and fairly scarce WW1 bayonet issued to one of the major combatants of that war manufactured at the famous Mauser factory in Imperial Germany.
