Model 1842 French issue Yataghan bayonet in scabbard to fit the .71” calibre family of percussion muskets, short rifles and artillery carbines issued to the French army circa 1840. Heavy ribbed brass hilt with release catch to the rear left and flat spring to the right side with cross guard having the muzzle ring to the top and a rear facing hook quilon to the underside. Fullered Yataghan blade signed to the top with French Ordnance Chatellerault arsenal marks and dated 1854. The cross guard struck with issue number 791. In its regulation pattern button ended steel scabbard with frog suspension bar to the front serial numbered 716. A refined version of the original 1840 Yataghan bayonet the 1842 has a heavier blade, an external flat steel spring and a steel rather than brass cross guard. In good condition with good hilt and working catch, good blade with some old staining along the length in a good scabbard. A nice example of a classic European Yataghan bayonet to the Imperial French Army of the Mid Victorian era.
