A good US army issue Model 1873 bayonet in scabbard with leather hanger / frog to fit the 45-70” trap door rifle. Blued socket with locking ring to the middle. Blued tri corn blade is struck to the top face with US. In its 1887 pattern blued steel scabbard with leather hanger to the top fitted with brass hook to hang from the regulation issue US infantry canvas Mills belt with cartridge loops, the button of the brass hook stamped US. A typical socket bayonet of the period the M1873 was a well made and dependable weapon that saw long service on the .45-70” Trap Door Springfield rifles. Initially scabbards were fitted with a plain leather belt loop but with the adoption of the Mills belt with canvas loops to carry spare rounds the 1887 scabbard was developed to hang from one of the ammo loops of the belt. In very good condition with nice blue finish to the bayonet in a nice clean scabbard with good hangar. A nice example of a classic US army issue bayonet of the post Civil War period when the army and the settlers were moving west.
