Model 1842/59 French issue Yataghan bayonet in scabbard to fit the .71” calibre family of percussion muskets, short rifles and artillery carbines issued to the French army circa 1840, dated 1861 by Chatellerault arsenal. Heavy ribbed brass hilt with coil spring operated release catch has cross guard having the muzzle ring to the top and a rear facing hook quilon to the underside. Fullered Yataghan blade signed to the top Mre Impale de Chatt Avril 1861 J B Mle 1842 for manufacture in April of 1861. The blade struck with French Ordnance inspection marks. In its regulation pattern black painted steel scabbard. A refined version of the original 1840 and 1842 Yataghan bayonets the 1842/59 has the heavier blade and iron cross guard of the 1842 but fitted with an improved coil spring operated release catch as opposed to the flat leaf spring fitted to the 1842. In very good condition with good grip. Nice clean well signed blade in a good scabbard with one small dent to the lower left. A good example of a scarce bayonet by one of the Imperial French Government’s Ordnance factories.
