US 1960’s Vietnam war period issue M5 A1 bayonet to fit the Garand M1 service rifle by Milpar in its correct US marked scabbard with the tie down loop hole in the tip. Hilt with chequered plastic grip scales has M5 A1 pattern release catch to the front behind the cross guard which is fitted with a stud to locate in the front of the Garands gas port when fitted to the rifle. The front of the cross guard stamped U.S. M5 A1 above MILPAR COL for manufacture by the Columbus Milpar & Manufacturing Co. who were issued with three M5 contracts during the early / mid 1960’s. Parkerised single edged M5 blade with false edge to the top front In its correct issue green synthetic scabbard with green canvas frog marked US M8 A1 BM CO. Adopted in 1953 the M5 Garand bayonet utilised the M4 carbine bayonet blade fitted to an improved hilt with cross guard plug to retain the bayonet on the rifle, it remained the standard issue bayonet for the US army until the M1 Garand was replaced by the M14 then M16 rifles. The M5 was a very good weapon well suited to both bayonet fighting and use as a fighting knife in its own right. In good condition with good clean blade, nice plastic grips with no chips or cracks and a good regulation issue scabbard. A nice regulation issue Cold War / Vietnam War period US army bayonet.
