French issue Gras sword / epee bayonet in its issue scabbard by the scarce maker Deny of Paris, serial number 209. Hilt with rivet retained walnut grip scales has brass pommel and steel cross guard with hooked quilon to the lower half struck with various French ordnance issue and inspection marks. ‘T’ section epee blade is signed L DENY PARIS 1879 to the top. In its regulation pattern blued steel scabbard with button end and frog suspension loop to the rear, the numbers not matching. Developed from the heavier brass handled Chassepot Yataghan bayonet the Gras has a lighter blade and wooden scales which made it a good weapon both when fitted to the rifle or as a standalone sword with its sharp pointed ‘epee’ stabbing blade. In very good condition with clean blade, clear French ordnance marks, working catch and a good scabbard. A nice regulation French issue bayonet by a scarce maker to the French Government of the day.
