A rare 2nd pattern, long release catch spring Model 1873 Yataghan sword bayonet to fit the Dutch Beaumont 11mm Navy rifle. Brass ribbed hilt with release button to the left side has improved second model long spring to the right. Blanking plate to fill the original short spring fitting hole visible to the left side. Cross guard with barrel loop to the top and hook quillion to the lower half is struck with 5715 to the right side next to an inspection stamp and D715 to the left. The quillion with a press fitted brass band stamped 1, probably a museum or collection rack number? 22 ¾” curved Yataghan sword blade is struck to the left rear with the makers name P.STEVENS MAASTRICHT and to the right with a Dutch inspection stamp. In its issue steel scabbard with frog loop to the front and button chape. Stamped to the front 609 next to an over stamped number and to the rear 544B. Only 5400 Navy Beaumont’s were manufactured for Dutch issue by Stevens of Maastricht in the Netherlands and P D Luneschloss in Germany. Based on the popular Chassepot bayonet of the time these bayonets were initially fitted with short leaf catch springs which proved unreliable in service and so the bayonets were factory refitted with longer springs to make these 2nd models. In fair to good condition with some small patches of pitting to the blade, good factory marks and grip with working catch in a nice scabbard retaining some fading blue finish. A scarce bayonet to a major European Navy of the time, this is the first of these bayonets I have seen.
