Joseph Rodgers of Sheffield RAF flight crew dinghy knife in scabbard on canvas base to be affixed to dinghy. 3” blade with cutting edge to the lower side with rounded safe tip and can opener to the front signed JOSEPH RODGERS SHEFFIELD ENGLAND next to patent mark. Bright orange painted floating cork handle with tape retained string lanyard securing the knife to the scabbard to prevent loss overboard when in use. In its issue brown leather scabbard which is stitched to an orange painted woven base which is stuck to the inflatable boat to avoid loss in heavy seas etc. Issued from WW2 onwards normally in the larger multiple occupancy emergency dinghies carried in bomber and transport aircraft these knives are designed to have no points so as to be safe when used in inflatable boats, they are painted bright orange so as to be easily found when needed in an emergency, float if dropped into the water and are attached to the scabbard by a sting which is released as the knife is pulled from the scabbard so it cannot be lost overboard. In mint unissued condition with string still factory wrapped.
