WW1 Monocular owned by V. J. Dawson of the Royal North Devon Hussars.

£175

A WW1 period private purchase cased Monocular owned by V. J. Dawson of the Royal North Devon Hussars. A good quality unnamed monocular telescope with brown leather covering to the body has focusable eyepiece with graduated scale to the rear. In its leather case, the top stamped V.J. DAWSON R. NORTH DEVON HUSSARS. V.J. Dawson appears twice in the records, first in the 1901 Boer war list as a second lieutenant along with his fellow ranking officers:

2nd Lieutenants. (S)
Dawson, V. J. 21 July
I.I. Cave

A. L. Iaie Capt.
Mlers, P. P l Feb
Hope, L. N. 21June

And the second time in the military gazette on 13th May 1920 as a captain on his return to active service in the regiment transferred back from duty with the Machine Gun Corps:

Royal North Devon.—Capt. V. J. Dawson is restored to the estbt. on ceasing to be empld. with M.G.C. 13th May 1920.

The North Devon Hussars saw wide service in WW1 in Gallipoli, Egypt, Palestine and then in Flanders in 1918. They ceased to exist as a unit when they were amalgamated with the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry on the 7th of June 1920 making this a WW1 period telescope. In good working order with clear image and focus, small chip out of rim of the eye piece in a good clearly marked case. An interesting monocular to a named officer worthy of further research.
