French Mle 1874 ‘Boite a Graisse’ oil / cleaning tin.

An unused French Mle 1874 ‘Boite a Graisse’ oil / cleaning tin issued with the Chassepot needle fire service rifle and the later Gras centre fires. Two compartment tin with hinged lids has remains of oil to one side and an unidentified fibrous oily cleaning material to the other. Part of the issue cleaning kit used by French soldiers from the mid 1860’s onwards these practical tins saw issue up to the years before the outbreak of the Great War and no doubt many saw service in the trenches. In very good condition with working hinge and remains of original contents. An interesting item and ideal accompaniment to a collection of French arms.
