British Ordnance issue Pattern 1885 Cavalry Troopers sword from the Reginald Cheetham collection of arms and armour to the Lancashire Hussars. Grip with rivet retained press chequered leather scales has full hand guard with Maltese Cross decoration to the front. Fullered slightly curved 1885 blade stamped to the rear left 5/86 for manufacture in May 1886 and 5/89 to indicate inspection by an ordnance armourer in 1889. The right side struck with a Broad Arrow over WD above various ordnance inspection stamps and YC for later issue to a Yeomanry Cavalry unit. In its ordnance inspected steel Pattern 1885 scabbard with double hangar rings faintly stamped to the top ‘? LcsH 219’ for issue to the Lancashire Hussars. In fair / good used military condition with nice clean well marked blade (the tip rounded), intact leather scales that have been worn half smooth with use, the bowl retaining traces of service grey paint finish in a nice scabbard of correct pattern. Typical of the cavalry swords of the mid / late Victorian period the 1885’s come from an age when the sword was still a significant weapon of choice for mounted men in action and is a very practical and efficient weapon for the cavalrymen of the period. An interesting sword at a good price for one of these increasingly rare and collectable weapons.
