A Belgian 19th Century Pattern 1889 Officers sword by Auguste Fonson of Brussels in its steel scabbard. Wire bound sharkskin grip with four bar brass hand guard, the front of the guard stamped with issue number 191. Pipe back blade struck to the rear left with makers mark FONSON & CO FABRICANTS BRUEXLLES. In its correct military pattern steel scabbard with single suspension hangar. Regulation pattern issue to the Belgian army these are typical of the arms carried by officers of the day being very useful and practical weapons both for mounted men and in combat on foot. Made by Auguste Fonson of the famous Brussels sword making dynasty these were widely used both in Belgian and other European countries as private purchase swords by offices during the last few years that swords were practical weapons on the battle field before they became purely a badge of rank for ceremonial purposes. In good condition with nice clean blade, good hilt and a nice scabbard.
